On Aug. 6 Tennessee Commissioner of Education Dr. Penny Schwinn visited Munford Middle School.

She was introduced by the principal, Mrs. Kathryn Huffman and then gave an inspirational message to begin the school year.

“I know your data as a school, and I know how well you do,” Schwinn said. “I also know that you genuinely care about students.”

Schwinn spoke about her time as an educator and her work prior to becoming the commissioner.  She then held a question and answer session with the staff, followed by an impromptu photo opp.

Huffman said, “I’m thrilled that we had the unique opportunity to have our commissioner speak to the faculty and staff.  We have wonderful people at MMS, and I’m delighted that we were all able to share in this special day.”

Those in attendance included Vicki Shipley, former principal of MMS and Tennessee Principal of the Year; Dr. Rebekah Byrd, director of instruction for Tipton County Schools; Steve Maclin, 6-12 supervisor of Tipton County Schools; Marty Burlison, chairman of Tipton County School Board; and Patrice Martin, director of the Southwest Core Office.
