Covington alderwoman candidate J.B. Leverette hosted a voter rally on the square last week

Several local political candidates came together Friday evening on the historic court square in Covington to support candidate J.B. Leverette and stress the importance of getting people out to vote.

“We have over 500 people living in Covington that are able to vote but have yet to register,” said Alderman John Edwards, who is also running for mayor.

“Registering to vote is now easier than ever and can be done on your phone using the State of Tennessee’s Go Vote TN app,” said Alderwoman Deborah Reed. “Voting is one of the first steps you can take to get politically active in your community,” she followed.

This is Leverette’s first time on the ballot, which aligns with a national trend where there have been many first-time candidates and they each have their own unique reason for running.

“I was tired of seeing things happening in the community that I didn’t agree with and affected my family,” Leverette told the crowd from her red, white and blue balloon-filled stage. “I started attending alderman meetings and slowly began to find my voice. I decided to run because I feel my neighborhood needs a bold leader that is ready to walk the walk and talk the talk. There also needs to be more accountability for leaders locally, and I want to be actively involved.”

The evening concluded with all of the candidates agreeing that their needs to be a strong push to register voters before the October 6th deadline.

Leverette is running in District 1, which encompasses northwest Covington, along with Johnetta Yarbrough, Olean Anderson, Shelvie Rose and Brian “Moody” Max.

Edwards has held the seat for the past 13 years.

Voter registration for the November 2018 municipal elections will be open until Oct. 6. Early voting begins Oct. 17.
