The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s two-week dead period, during which high school athletes are not allowed to practice on campus, ended Monday, meaning the state’s high school football teams began their first official week of practice in preparation for the 2019 season.
With the temperatures hovering in the mid-90s even early in the morning, the area’s four teams – Brighton, Covington, Munford and Tipton-Rosemark Academy – hit the practice fields each morning this week. Players are not allowed to practice in pads until later this week, so everybody ran through plays and drills and helmets and T-shirts.
There will be several scrimmages and 7-on-7 games coming up over the next few weeks.
Brighton, which has a new coach in Mike David, took on Ripley Tuesday in a 7-on-7 game and joined Covington and several other teams in a 7-on-7 tournament Thursday at Dyersburg High School.
The Chargers, under new head coach J.R. Kirby, have scrimmages scheduled at Trinity Christian Academy on Aug. 2 and at Huntingdon on Aug. 9.
Munford, which plays Covington in the season opener on Aug. 23, will host Memphis Academy of Health and Sciences in a scrimmage on Aug. 1 and Union City on Aug. 9.
Tipton-Rosemark Academy will host the Memphis Night Hawks on Aug. 6 and Hartsfield on Aug. 10 in a pair of scrimmages. The Rebels have a third scrimmage scheduled for Aug. 16 at First Assembly Christian School.
