MEMPHIS – A Covington man was indicted last week on federal drug charges, U.S. Attorney General Mike Dunavant announced Monday.

According to a press release, on April 3 a probation officer smelled marijuana while conducting a compliance check at Marcus Green’s North Maple Street home in conjunction with Operation Crime Driver.

Later that day, deputies with the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant and found 745 grams of marijuana packaged in a number of bags, digital scales, plastic bags and $6,627 in cash.

Green, 37, has been on supervised release after serving a year in federal prison for smuggling narcotics into the jail at 201 Poplar in Memphis in 2015, where he worked as a correctional officer.

“Being a former law enforcement officer and having previously been convicted of a drug offense, this defendant should have know better than to continue his criminal conduct,” Dunavant said. “Unfortunately, he chose to reoffend while on supervised release. This is exactly the type of recidivist behavior that Operation Crime Driver was designed to detect and apprehend, and I commend the good work of our law enforcement partners in Tipton County.”

The new criminal complaint charging Green with distribution and possession of a controlled substance was filed on May 1. A federal grand jury returned an indictment against him on May 7.

Green is facing up to five years in federal prison, which is served day-for-day, a fine of $250,000 and a two-year term of supervised release.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean Hord is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.

Dunavant’s office reminds the charges are merely allegations and Green is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
