The Tipton County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the recent graduation of Lieutenant John Weatherly from the prestigious School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University. This program was implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983. The SPSC program provides upper level college instruction with courses focused on leadership, organizational behavior, applied statistics, human resources, employee relations, planning, and policy. The students had their knowledge challenged in the subject areas through written examinations, class projects, presentations and quizzes as well as staff study papers.
SPSC is interactive and designed to prepare law enforcement managers for positions of greater responsibility by combining academic principles with practical applications. But, beyond the academics, the SPSC creates an environment for building relationships, sharing of experiences, and developing resources from other law enforcement agencies that will last long after the course ends.
Lieutenant Weatherly was elected as the class vice president by his peers and was one of 29 students in SPSC Class #460 to successfully complete the 10 week program. Class 460 was comprised of law enforcement leaders from eight different states and thirteen different agencies. He was the only one in his class with a corrections specific background. Lt. Weatherly was joined at graduation by Sheriff J.T. “Pancho” Chumley, Chief Deputy Billy Daugherty, Deputy Chief Shannon Beasley, wife Amanda Sells Weatherly, parents Rabon and Pam Weatherly, brother Jake Weatherly, and niece Madalynn Grace Weatherly.
Each graduating SPSC class chooses a recipient for a legacy gift. Class #460 chose to present its legacy gift to the Tennessee Public Safety Network, an organization that helps first responders with emotional wellness by providing peer support and critical incident stress debriefings.
Lieutenant Weatherly joins an elite alumnus of graduates comprised of thousands of leaders from all over the world, many who hold upper level command positions in their law enforcement agencies. He joins fellow alumni from the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office, Chief Deputy Billy Daugherty and Lieutenant Daniel Walls.
“Lieutenant Weatherly is already a valued member of the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office leadership team and the additional knowledge gained though his attendance at SPSC will further enhance his abilities as a leader and benefit both the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the citizens of Tipton County,” said Sheriff Chumley.
Lieutenant Weatherly began his career in law enforcement in 2003 with the Tennessee Department of Corrections as a correctional officer and correctional emergency response team member. In 2007, he began his employment with the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office, where he has risen through the ranks. He is currently a member of the Crisis Negotiation Team, Gang Intelligence Unit and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing team.
