Mt. Carmel

It’s a cloudy rainy Sunday with temperatures falling fast this afternoon. It will be in the forties for the next few nights with cooler days. Yay!

This week’s Farm Report:  We finally got started cutting soybeans on Monday. Rain, then back in the field Thursday. But heavy fog and dew kept us out until after lunch Saturday, then rain today. Basis is better on bean prices now since the river is going back up, nine feet, so we are back in business!

We got up Tuesday morning with our well out. We had no toilets, hand or clothes washing, boiling food, heating or cooling, since our unit runs on well water. But thanks to Benton Mize, it was fixed Wednesday morning – new pump. At least this one lasted 14 years so it was probably ready to quit!

Caroline and I visited with the queen of Mt. Carmel Thursday after I picked her up from Amber Turner’s. We had a good visit and Mrs. McCalla seems to be doing better with her eyesight!

Five of us – LaVerne Baxter, Bonnie Glass, Pam Tankersley, Dianne Nutt and I – tremendously enjoyed “Arsenic and Old Lace” at the historic Ruffin Theater Friday night! It was great and hope lots of you got to see it. William Mashburn was wonderful as Teddy!

On our prayer list at the Covington Church of Christ are Cindy Clark, home after surgery; Kelley Melton, surgery this week; Paulette Watkins, hospital; Mary Jean Stockton, tests; Paula McLean, good results; Charles Yoakum, infection and Houston Hall, Tina Whaley and Jackson Hughey in our prayers taking treatments, so many friends and relatives of our members and all of our servicemen and women.

The birthday party at River Terrace will be on the 21st at 2 p.m., Trunk or Treat the 28th and Crossing Borders Retreat from Oct. 20-22 for the teens.

Happy birthday this week goes to Ron Chaney and Paula Maxwell on Oct. 15, to Martine Dickerson on the 16th, to Tess Mosley on the 17th, to Abby Edmonds on the 19th and to Wayne Dalrymple on the 20th!

Happy birthday at Clopton United Methodist Church to Lanie Lyles on Oct. 17, to Fay Brooks, Riley Clark, Shannon Fields and Patricia Johnson on the 19th and to Laura Jeffords, Bailey Roberts and Sherry Keith Wisemiller on the 20th!

From the Covington-Tipton County Chamber of Commerce: Vote at businesses on the Square for your favorite Scarecrow (#10 Edward Scissorhands!)

Christmas Open House will be Nov. 3 – 4. Harry Potter Trivia Night is Oct. 30 at the library starting at 6:30 p.m. for ages 18 and up. And lots going on at the Veterans Museum!

This week’s Farmer’s Almanac Quote: “Use colorful golf tees to mark the location of dormant perennials.”

Stay warm this week! We may have to turn on the fireplace some mornings!

Until next week . . .
