The Dyersburg State Community College women’s soccer team will not wear purple and gold when its seasons gets cranked up in the fall, but it wouldn’t look strange if it did.
Former Covington High and current DSCC coach Robert Luttrell signed two more former Lady Chargers – Markesha Stephens and Tydriana Pierce – last week. Now there are six class of 2019 players on the squad, plus 2018 CHS grad Maddie Ray.
“I could have gone out and gotten other girls, but why?” Luttrell said. “I know these girls, I know their work ethic and know the kind of people they are. This is the last year I’ll be able to get girls who I’ve coached for four years.”
Stephens played wing and forward last year and was the second-leading scorer on the team behind Madison Luttrell, who is the state’s all-time leading scorer. Stephens transferred from Brighton after her freshman season and had to sit out as a sophomore before excelling during her junior and senior seasons.
“She’s a speedster who is really, really coachable,” Luttrell said. “Even when she had to sit out that year she showed up every day to practice.”
Pierce has started since she was a freshman.
“She’s one of the strongest players I’ve ever had,” Luttrell. “She wins just about every 50-50 ball. People just bounce off her.”
The other class of 2019 Covington players who have already signed with DSCC are Madison Luttrell, Lexi Horton, Gracie Flanagan and Kirby Bradshaw. All six were contributors to a program that went to the state tournament the last two seasons.
“I want to get players from other places, but Tipton County will be my number one place,” Luttrell said. “We have three very competitive high school teams here. This will be the place I look first. Why not look at my family?”
